Huddle

A social fitness platform for small-group training, balancing affordability with focused coaching.

Huddle is a social and booking app designed for small-group workouts. It addresses the high cost of one-on-one coaching and the lack of focus in large group classes. By combining social networking with a streamlined booking system, the platform makes professional training more accessible while building a community-driven fitness experience.

Problem

The “Apartment Gym Gap”

While the on-site gyms provided by New York apartments offer physical convenience, they suffer from a significant disconnect in terms of the actual “fitness experience.” Through in-depth interviews with four users with established fitness routines (Tengmo, Amanda, Simon, and Maika), I discovered that—even for experienced exercisers—the current model presents a dual challenge: both economic and psychological.

Pain Point
1. The Financial Barrier
Insights from experienced trainees like Amanda and Simon suggest that 1-on-1 private coaching ($100+/hr) is seen as a “short-term luxury.” It is [[financially unsustainable]] for those wanting to maintain a consistent, long-term habit.

2. The Motivation Vacuum
Users like Tengmo and Maika noted that training solo in a quiet apartment gym often feels isolating. Without a [[community atmosphere]], even experienced individuals struggle with “decision paralysis” and a rapid loss of motivation.

3. The Missing Middle Ground
There is a clear vacuum between expensive 1-on-1 sessions and impersonal mass classes. Experienced users crave tailored guidance that leverages existing facilities while sharing costs with a small group.

Solution

The Huddle Ecosystem

Huddle is a location-agnostic marketplace that connects [[Independent Freelance Trainers]] with urban fitness enthusiasts. By focusing on the [[“2-5 Person Micro-Huddle,”]] we eliminate the overhead of commercial gym memberships. While prioritizing small-group energy, Huddle maintains the absolute freedom of 1-on-1 sessions, allowing users to tailor their training scale and venue.

01. The 2-5 “Micro-Huddle”: Quality Meets Value
The 2-5 person group is our “Sweet Spot.” It ensures that every trainee receives the same personalized posture correction as a private session, but at a fraction of the cost by splitting the trainer’s fee with peers.
02. Unbound Freelance Expertise
Huddle empowers independent trainers who are not tied to specific commercial gyms. This allows for total flexibility—your coach meets you at your apartment gym or a local park—eliminating hidden “club fees” and putting transparency back into the hiring process.

03. Absolute 1-on-1 Flexibility
For those seeking maximum focus or rapid results, Huddle retains the freedom of traditional 1-on-1 coaching. Users can seamlessly toggle between initiating a private session or a group Huddle, giving them total control over their fitness journey.

04. Social Trust & Data Tracking
Through an in-app Follower System and Feeds, users can see if friends or followed peers are in a group before joining. Combined with Activity Tracking, we turn routine training into a visible, shared achievement.

Research & Process

From Insights to Strategy

I started by mapping the existing struggles of real gym-goers. Through Lo-fi prototyping and direct testing, I discovered that while “Competition” is polarizing, “Connection” is universal. This led to a strategic expansion of the app's social features and a refined system architecture.

01. Current User Journey: Mapping the Struggle
I visualized the daily routines of Tengmo, Amanda, Simon, and Maika. This helped me pinpoint the “Drop-out Points”—where high costs and social isolation caused even experienced trainees to lose their momentum.

02. Affinity Map: Strategic Synthesis
40+ observations led to the core concept: The Micro-Huddle (2-5 people). This model leverages freelance expertise and underutilized spaces while creating the social energy users crave.

03. Lo-fi Testing: The Social Pivot
Testing the initial prototype revealed a nuanced insight: while “Ranking” was polarizing, “Seeing Friends” was a universal motivator. Users wanted to know who was in the group before committing, and they craved a space to see ongoing community activity.

04. The Structural Pivot: From Logic to Blueprint
User testing was the catalyst for Huddle's final architecture. The feedback revealed a deep desire for Social Validation over pure competition, leading to a major structural upgrade: integrating Community Feeds and Friend Presence directly into the booking logic.
